Trauma & Psychotherapy

Traumas from childhood, more recent experiences, or intergenerational and transgenerational history are sources of persistent, deep suffering that cause us to miss out on the fulfilment, pleasure, and joy available in our lives right now.
In my work with trauma, I draw upon more than 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist, and training in modern trauma therapies such as EMDR, CRM and DBR. I listen to and work with clients to find the balanced approach that suits them best.
I offer care and attention to a client’s experience of trauma and its impact on their lives; a gentle, safe space to speak, feel heard and understood, and receive support towards healing and liberation from the pain of the past.

Below is an extract from my book ‘An Integrative Approach to Healing Complex and Transgenerational Trauma: Psychotherapy and the Soul’

(Routledge, 2025):

It is important to recognise that traumas from overwhelming events and circumstances are unavoidable aspects of life. The forms of trauma which we take to therapy are causes of both deep suffering and alienation from the qualities of self, which enable a fulfilling life. Trauma as consequences of neglect, abuse, violence and oppression in its myriad relational, social and political forms make life a terrible ordeal and are also symptomatic of our collective human condition…I believe that to be openly met by another person, in our suffering and its often bewildering expressions and forms, is healing for the wounds and ruptures we carry, individually and collectively.  In an initial session with a client, I describe my soul-based philosophy and approach to help them make an informed decision with respect to commencing sessions with me. I believe trauma therapy is a process of soul for a movement towards wholeness, individually and collectively, with the inclusion and integration of the potential and qualities of the self. Thus, I strive to practise with that essential trust to hold, meet and reflect with the client in a manner that confirms their self and ultimate wholeness. I share with Levine the belief that where there is severe trauma: ‘…yet still, the smouldering flame of the deep self can miraculously reignite, given the right opportunity and carefully calibrated support’ (2010, p. 192). People who come to therapy for the treatment of trauma will have suffered overwhelming shocks to their functioning and orientation, causing the task of self-exploration and healing to take them along difficult paths they would not have otherwise travelled. So, to meet with a person living with trauma in their soul and body is a profound and privileged experience… As part of my commitment to this work, I draw upon contemporary approaches to trauma where they align with a client’s needs …I have trained in Eye Movement Desensitisationand Reprocessing (EMDR), the Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), LifespanIntegration, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) and studied and experienced Somatic Experiencing (SE) as a client for several years.
